How much smaller is a Full size bed than a Queen?

A full-size bed (also known as a double bed) and a queen-size bed are similar in many ways, with the primary difference being their dimensions. A full-size bed typically measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, while a queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. This means a queen is only 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full. While that extra space can make a difference for couples, the increase is relatively modest—especially when compared to larger options like king or California king beds.

Historically, full-size beds were the standard for adult sleepers, including couples. It wasn’t until the latter half of the 20th century that queen-size beds became popular as expectations around personal space and comfort evolved. In older homes and historic settings, you’ll often find bed frames that match full-size dimensions, since they were once considered perfectly adequate—even luxurious—for two people.

Today, many people still opt for full-size beds, especially in smaller apartments or guest rooms, because the difference in size between full and queen doesn’t always justify the additional space taken up. For single sleepers or smaller couples, a full-size bed can offer nearly the same comfort level as a queen without requiring as much floor space or a larger mattress investment.

Why did I write this post? Well we have two historic beds that we have kept as Full size and two that we have converted to Queen. They are much more sturdy, in my opinion, left as they were originally made with solid wood sideboards.

Gholson room has an amazing set that remains full and Weis Chamber has two amazing historic sets-one Full size and one Queen.

Don't be scared of a Full size bed!
